The strength of every Avitide affinity resin is reliant upon a novel affinity ligand, engineered to perform and withstand the rigors of bioprocessing. Avitide maintains a suite of ligand libraries and scaffold designs that is in constant evolution. This position will be at the forefront of those efforts and reports directly to the CSO. The candidate will provide core expertise and technical leadership to direct the discovery of affinity ligands.  Mastery of at least 1 display technology (e.g. yeast, phage, RNA or in-vitro selection technologies), ligand library design and high throughput protein engineering is critical to the role.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree (MS/PhD) in sciences or engineering and several years’ experience in an R&D laboratory
  • Expertise in either yeast display, phage display or an in-vitro display technique
  • Expertise with protein engineering particularly in high throughput laboratories
  • Demonstrated history of strong hands-on ability, problem solving, and independent experimental design and execution
  • Demonstrated scientific leadership and in managing multiple parallel projects

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize methods for the discovery of affinity ligands suitable for biopharmaceutical purification and bioprocessing.
  • Design and introduction of new binding scaffolds
  • Ligand maturation and engineering for extreme stability
  • Preparation of data and technology packages for external Avitide partners
  • Ability to innovate and introduce new techniques to improve the power of Avitide’s ligand generation platform

Desirable Skills

  • Depth of experience in molecular biology and protein engineering methodologies
  • Experience with alternative scaffolds or a diverse array of ligand types
  • Experience with techniques for measuring protein-protein interactions (e.g. Biolayer interferometry/ForteBio, SPR, FRET, FP)
  • Strong structure-activity knowledge with peptide and/or protein ligands
  • Experience with multiplexed assays (e.g. Luminex)
  • NGS and bioinformatic analysis highly desirable
  • Experience with high throughput lab automation and modern flow cytometers

Avitide Cultural Qualities

  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation
  • Actively contribute to our collaborative team culture
  • Agile and quick to adapt
