About This Position

The Fermentation Engineer will lead an expanded initiative to produce recombinant ligands that are defining components of Avitide developed affinity resins intended for clinical manufacturing programs. This work will span strain screening/optimization, process development and lab scale fermentation culminating in liaising with contract manufacturing organizations for efficient technical transfer. It requires a creative individual who can work hands-on as part of a dynamic and integrated team. The candidate will also be the primary technical expert for fermentation and process development, providing technical leadership, troubleshooting support and guidance for benchtop fermentation screening through process transfer.  Avitide seeks candidates who are highly self-motivated and can work in a collaborative fashion with other interdisciplinary team members in a fast-paced and exciting work environment.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Extensive experience with laboratory scale microbial fermentation for heterologous recombinant protein production in hosts such as E. Coli, Saccharomyces, Pichia and Bacillus
  • Strong knowledge of basic protein biochemistry, microbiology, and recombinant protein expression in microbial hosts
  • Experimental design and data analysis capabilities including Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Command of modern computer controlled fermentation systems
  • Experience with downstream processing unit operations such as centrifugation, homogenization, ultrafiltration is desirable
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work under tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills, documentation, organization, good record keeping, writing reports and SOPs
  • Able to work effectively in cross functional teams to solve manufacturing problems or implement improved procedures
  • Experience with management of and technical transfer to CMOs. Direct experience with larger scale fermentation (>100 L and > 1000 L) is welcome
  • Degree (BS/MS/PhD) in sciences or engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in a laboratory setting
  • Demonstrated history of strong hands-on ability, problem solving, and independent experimental design and execution

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and execution of fermentation screening and benchtop fermentation and recovery processes for recombinant proteins expressed in microbial hosts
  • Optimization of fermentation processes using scale down models to predict performance at manufacturing scale
  • Identifying and evaluating new technologies to improve fermentation and recovery processes
  • Participation in strain and ligand optimization efforts as part of an integrated effort to produce optimized ligands for resin development and manufacturing
  • Independently designing and executing experiments and communicating results and challenges to stakeholders
  • Writing process SOPs and supporting strain and process transfer
